Dutch Trig application

Timing of Dutch Trig treatment

Dutch Trig® is applied once every year, in early spring, as soon as the leaves have started to sprout after flowering of the elm, preferably before any beetle infection of Dutch elm disease occurs. 25% Leaf expansion is the best time to start doing the injections, for North America this is usually the first week of May. The sooner the injections are done, the better. Normally al injections have to be done in May. Injection later during the growing season does not protect the tree from “early” infections.

Where to inject

The vaccine is injected into the tree trunk at breast height, every four inches of tree circumference, by pushing the chisel through the bark and releasing the exact amount of vaccine (one drop) with one pull of the trigger. There is no drilling, no pressurised equipment and no root collar excavation necessary. The chisel is designed with such an angle that the current new years growth ring can be penetrated, but that older growth rings can not be damaged/penetrated in order to prevent old, already compartmentalised, infections being released again in the newly formed growth ring. The wound is in fact no more than a shallow incision.

Method of application

BTL Tree Services developed a very fast, safe and reliable hand held tree injection system in the early 90's, with which the vaccine can be administered to the tree in mere seconds, minimising equipment needs for injection, application costs and enabling the arborist to treat very large numbers of elm trees in one season.

The method of injecting (actually inoculating) has been chosen, to enable the Arborist to:

  • use as little control agent as possible
  • use it directly on only the targeted tree
  • ensure a direct uptake by the tree
  • reach the new year-ring effectively with minimum damage
  • minimise changes of breaking natural barriers between old infections and healthy wood

Closed injection system

The closed injection system prevents spills and any impact on plants, trees or animals in the environment. The used gauge pistol inoculates the right amount of vaccine with one pull of the trigger. The tool has an ergonomically correct design to enable the arborist to do many injections without any physical discomforts.

Application with the Gouge Pistol is:

  • Safe: no hazard for man or the environment
  • Easy: no drilling, or pressurised equipment
  • Fast: average 2-3 minutes per treated tree
  • Because the minimal time needed for injection per tree, one arborist is able to treat large numbers of trees in the time frame available for Dutch Trig injections.

Who does the injections?

Dutch Trig is available for professional Arborists only, because an expert eye able to recognise already diseased trees before injecting is essential. The yearly injection can be seen as a disadvantage, but is counterbalanced by the fact that with the yearly injection the tree also gets a yearly visual inspection by a specialist at the same time.
